Pictionary/ Dictionary of the Future
There is a different root, prefix, or siffix every week. Students who come up with a word for the root tree can create a picture that helps them remember the definition. The pictures should be stapled to the home practice paper and turned in Friday. (These are not from this week's spelling words).

Root/ Prefix/ Suffix of the Week
There is a different root, prefix, or suffix each week. Check student planners or the home page for this week. Students are to come up with 3 words that use the root, prefix, or suffix, put it on a post-it or small piece of paper and stick it to our tree in the classroom. Students may use family members, dictionaries, the internet, ect. for help. These can be turned in at any point during the week. (These are not from this week's spelling words).

Word Hunt in Writer's Notebook
Students will need to bring home thier writing journals for this activity. Students should read through their own writing and find 3 words that fit this week's spelling pattern. They should highlight the words, copy them in their word study notebook, and correct them if they are spelled incorrectly.

Word Hunt in an Independent Book
Students will read an independent familiar book. They will search for 3 words that fit this week's spelling pattern. Record the words in the word study notebook

Speed Sort

Students are to sort OLD word study words 3 times as fast as they can. An adult or older sibling should time them and check for accuracy.  Their sort number and times should be recorded in the word study notebook.

Brainstorming
Students can brainstorm or look in dictionaries, newspapers, magazines, or the internet for words that fit this week's spelling patterns. The words should be written on a piece of paper and stapled to the word study home practice paper to be turned in Friday.

Blind Sort
On the back of the home practice paper is a form for the blind sort activity.  It is a practice test. The students will be asked to spell their header words then 10 or more of their words for this week. The students should spell the words correctly and put them under the correct header. They should also write their discovery. See below for an example of this paper.
